When in Doubt, Sound it Out

Last night, I watched the Scripps Spelling Bee, an annual tradition for me. Ever since I watched Spellbound, the documentary about eight teenagers and their parents' quest to win the 1999 National Spelling Bee, I've been completely hooked. I love that finally the smart kids get the attention they deserve and it's truly the only day on TV when it's cool to be so uncool.

If you haven't watched the Spelling Bee, you're missing out on these great moments. Get a good laugh on a Friday.

Here's one of my favorite Spelling Bee bloopers from last year:

Last night I watched it also! AND... I just finished reading a book by Karen Luddy called "SPELLDOWN" about a girl who goes from losing the school bee one year to attending (I won't say if she wins or not) the National Bee in the 1960's!

I highly suggest the book!

We watched the finals on ESPN and then the championship round on ABC. I love to see the personalities of the kids come out...some are pretty funny like Kennyi. Other book for younger kids on the topic is Abigail Spells.

I didn't get to watch it, but I love that kind of stuff. I love your last comment. Yes, I was (am?) a nerd!

I love the Spelling Bee but didn't get to watch it because my son was in a choir concert at his school. Thanks for the videos though--It made me feel as if I were watching it for the first time (which I was).

It's amazing! I can't believe these people... I was always first one out of the spelling bee in my class, and Lord knows what I'd do if I didn't have spellcheck!-- I'd be looking in a dictionary every-other word!

Yes, I'm still a "newscaster" :) I'm a reporter 3 days a week and an anchor on the weekends, it's fun!

I really don't know what to say... But, I did watch that movie, it was good. I don't make it a habit to watch spelling bee's though...

I loved Spellbound. I meant to watch the Bee and completely forgot to program it on the DVR. I'm so bummed.

I missed that show last night but have been hearing about it all day today. Wish I'd seen it!

Take care!

Best spelling bee blooper ever.

I thought I would pee when that happened

Haha.

I couldn't watch. I feel like an idiot when children spell better than I do.

Oh, and thanks for the tip on what to say to other mothers on my blog. I will keep that in mind!

I loved watching the spelling bees, my friends. I loved that its on ESPN and has the sports subtitles. I am so impressed with how poised and graceful these young spellers are. Way impressive.
Have good weekends!

I watched this too - I felt really stupid afterward!

They are all so stinkin' cute!

Numbnuts? HAHAHA!!!

Helene said...

That announcer had no sense of humor! He just had to know the minute he said "numnah", that some kid was gonna think he said "num-nut".

I didn't watch it but I used to totally rock the spelling bees when I was younger!!!

And Francesca, I'm SOOOOO not pregnant. No worries. My tubes have been burnt and clamped and tied off to the very core.

Spelling Bees are rather intriguing. Though, I am ashamed to say I love it when a word is spelled wrong. It kinda makes me feel better about myself. A ego boost.

Hahaha! Reminds me of being in a spelling bee when I was in first grade. I made it to the third round, when I spelling swim S-I-W-M. Good going.
