My Man Cave

I don't remember when we turned off our cable and opted instead for a very basic package. In an effort to cut down on the number of hours spent watching TV, we subscribe to only a few children's cable channels, the Food Network, and the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Network.

The good news is that our idea worked. Geoff and I do not watch as much TV as we used to. However, every good plan has its downside. Now, the programs we do watch are usually on the DIY Network and revolve around topics such as how to paint your kitchen cabinets or how to create faux-stone walls. Television at its finest!

One program that we recently came across was Man Caves. Have you seen it? Two hosts offer ideas and do-it-yourself instruction to turn a basic basement into the ultimate guys’ hangout. “Every guy needs a space to call his own … a sanctuary where boys can be boys, where life essentials include a wet bar, a poker table and a place to watch the game with the fellas.”

Some ideas are just pure brilliance. I was so inspired by this concept that I asked Geoff what he might like to have in his "man cave.” It took a bit to pull the answers out of him, but he eventually divulged that his ideal retreat would include a wet bar, flat screen TV, big arm chair, mini frig, pin ball machine, slot car race track, and massively loud stereo.

Hmmm....interesting, but can we do better? I have to admit that when I first envisioned Geoff's man cave, I thought it would be something incredibly grand. Maybe even along the lines of Snoop Dogg’s man cave.

Snoop’s cave keeps it real. In addition to his mini frig and custom couch made from the bumper of a 1961 Cadillac, Snoop has a direct line to his favorite restaurant…Denny’s. C'mon, do you really need anything more?

Of course, all of this discussion got me thinking about my ideal retreat. What would my man cave look like? Would it be anything like Snoop’s?

Indeed it would.

Meet my Pimped Out Powder Room:

Everything I need in a bathroom and more. Let's take a moment to discuss a few of the key features:
  • A pro-style hair dryer, so that I may appear like "I just stepped out of a salon" at all times.
  • A strategically placed laptop computer that allows me to conduct both my own business and my blog business at the same time.
  • The Wii, located on top of the toliet, so that I may stay in shape without ever having to leave my powder room.
  • As inspired by Snopp, a mini-frig, only pink.
  • An all-in-one heated towel rack/TV/mirror, as shown on the wall on right-hand side of the picture.
  • The Fusion Drink station, located on top of the mini-frig, so that I may offer refreshments to anyone who might pop by for a visit.

Naturally, there are a few features not shown above that would be important to include, such as photos of my family. I'm guessing that I will probably never want to leave my Pimped Out Powder Room, so it would be good to have small remembrances of what my husband and kids look like.

I'd also like to have the ability to put my powder room on "lock down," if needed. Sound proofing, gigantic locks, and video cameras would all be critial to ensure that my sanctuary is never breached unexpectedly. Think back to the movie, Panic Room, only way more pink.

Wow. Sometimes I think how awesome it would be to design my own 'pimped out' room. But then I start to feel all depressed knowing such a thing isn't gonna happen. Sigh.

Loving your powder room. Good call on the heated towels! And also, if you choose not to upgrade to more TV in that room, you'll be happy to know that hulu.com can provide you with hours of endless TV whilst relaxing.

OMG! I love my Fusion drink station!

I love your Girl Cave/Powder Room. Very nice. I'd totally stop by.

Did I spy a foot spa in front of your Wii holder? Get it?? Wii holder? hahahahahaha. ha.

I trust that Geoff's cave will have better artwork, but I highly recommend the bat phone line to Denny's. I mean. Super bird sandwich, big side of ranch, on call?? Forget coming to Wisconsin, I'll be your new neighbor.

Blessings, Carolynn

I dream of a Mom Cave: a place where I can go and cannot hear a single sound of the chaos that is taking place around me...a place where I am never in danger of stepping on a Lego with bare feet...a place where no one ever asks me for a sip of my Diet Coke and I can read a magazine from cover to cover. Until this place exists, I will gladly come hang in your Pink Pimped Powder Room. Love it!

You seem to be missing a very important item. The Snuggie.

I love your pimped out powder room. When can we expect to see it finished?

I love this! I watched that episode of "Fatherhood" btw. Don't forget to read today's Freak Magnet story!

I love it!!! Everything a woman could ever need! It would definitely have to be sound proofed and have a jetted garden tub somewhere close by. Pure bliss.
Congrats on 100 followers! :)

Kudos to you for minimizing the TV. I would love to cancel our cable but someone in my house would have an ESPN withdrawal. But I keep asking him anyway. I grew up with no TV..didn't have one until high school.

You really would never have to leave that room again! I want one....it would always be in panic mode!

Your "Man Cave" is hilarious! I can't get over the laptop placement. I agree with Jill. I would have to have a jetted tub and sound proof walls!!

As far as my hubby's man cave- I thought I did really well when I didn't insist on decorating his office. It is very manly and it has a dual role as our guest room. I caved and he loves it.

Before I realized that the man cave was Snoop Dog's, I wondered why your hubby had a portrait of Snoop Dog on his wall? Phew...wouldn't that be hard to see day in and day out. I'm loving the powder room. Is it just me or can I not see a picture of Kristen Stewart now and not think of Bella. I wonder if she's prefers the relative anonymity of Panic Room? :)

I love the idea of a powder room, boy do I need "Me time" numerous times per day. Brilliant! Just Imagine!!

Kimmy said...

LOL! That's great!

I have seen that show, Man Caves and I might add, I am a bit surprised by Snoop Dogs and the fact that his is sooo small. Hmm?

heidi said...

Sweet! I'd rather just have a cave of my own without a toilet as a focal point, though. I get tired of looking at toilets all day what with the cleaning and the potty training. Psh.

I'm loving that powder room.

oh my gosh, I love it!! I could so use a room like that!! and since I work at home on a computer, I can see perhaps even getting it to be a write off!!

I admire you for getting rid of mega-cable and opting for just a few channels; that would never go over here....

enjoy the weekend

I am not about to make our basement any more man cave-ish than it is already. It's dark, it's messy, it has peanut shells and shavings all over the floor, empty cans tipped on their sides, tv trays with unknown substances glued to the tops, and a stench which identifies it as the man cave. Isn't that enough?

I LOVE the pimped out powder room. I think I would make a separate little room for the fridge, though. Having it right next to the pooper kinda makes me gag. Hee, hee.

One can dream... It's not quite MY ideal, but we've all got our own tastes - it's all about US, isn't it?! Mine would be soundproof, but that toilet thing just doesn't work for me :)

Thanks for sharing...

That is quite the powder room. I really would go for the pink laptop.

Another fun post!!

What every woman's bathroom doesn't look like that? Too bad! Ha ha. In my dreams. I second on the sound proof walls and extra large spa tub.

Oh how I wish to have my own room!!! John has converted our garage into his "man cave"/oficina since he has his own business that involves massive amounts of tools.

Ok: so yes I was totally referring to Cattlemens and the waiter was Ashley Smentek.

The fact that you own the Chronic was enough to make my day!

That bathroom is eerily similar to mine.

Yes a lock down bathroom is essential. I have trained my dog to sit by the bathroom door and snarl at anyone who comes near. (I wish) You know when I lock the door Papa actually takes a nail and unlocks it if he should so desire? I can't stand that!!!!!!! Ooh just thinking about it is making me mad. We have had some big fights about it. I think I better blog up a story about it. Mmmmmmm Hmmmmmm.

Too, too funny! It reminds me of how much I miss Hal. He has been on the fritz for a while now. We used to have just the basic package, the very one you describe, but we were spending a fortune on Netflix. Now it's the other way around (I miss those DYI shows I used to spend a lot of time watching . . .)

LOL.. Love your Power Room dream. You though of everything except the Nanny so that you don't get intruded upon every 5 seconds.. :) I don't know about you but between my kids and my dogs, I'm never in there alone!

Thanks for coming by my blog, your reply cracked me up!!! And thanks for taking my side.. LOL

I'm totally living the Pimped Out Powder Room!!! You've got all the necessities right there...who could ask for more??!! I would imagine that's what heaven must look like!

I want one! That room rocks. Although I think I would prefer not to visit you while you were in it. It just needs a bed to nap in, and you are ready to go!

You are too silly! Is that the Barbie Dream House bathroom? My husband has turned the living room into his man cave.....he wants to get doors. It also serves as my office during the day because my "real office" is currently our "storage closet".

My OB is married to a perinatologist and between the two of them they built a multi million dollar home where the wiring alone was more than the price of our house. They have a panic room which cracks me up--the only thing I'd panic about is seeing their property taxes.

That reminds me of the episode of Married with Children when she remodeled the bathroom and it looked kind of like that.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Love your idea!

Speaking of basic cable...yeah...we do that every summer to save money while the husband isn't working (teacher), you've reminded me I should be cherishing my cable now while I have the chance!

I want my own padded room. I need it.

Grand Pooba said...

Now what are you going to call your man cave? It certainly can't have the word "man" in it.

Women Cave?
Girl Cave?
Chick Retreat?
Lady Powder Room?

They just don't have the same ring to them as man cave do they?

Well I think you've got quite the idea going for you. I would stop by all the time, however I think you need to add a seat for your guests. I expect nothing less than a pink lazy boy.
