Trailer Trash

You all know how I love my weekly dose of trashy US Weekly, but after four weeks straight of reading about Jon and Kate of the show Jon and Kate Plus Eight, I'm ready for other salacious scandals of actual celebrities. Really, how many times can I read about Jon and Kate's fledgling marriage and that Kate is a tart-tongued abrasive controlling diva?!

In my thorough literature research of Kate via US Weekly and OK! Magazine, it seems the magazines always point out the fact that she grew up in a trailer park. I am a bit sensitive to the magazine's citation of Kate's trailer park upbringing as if it explains why she's such fame seeking money monger.

Truth is, I actually lived in a trailer park in Dodge City, Kansas, for a year while growing up. It is a fact that even my husband didn't know. My family and I arrived in the US when I was eight without anything and we moved around quite a bit as my guardians couldn't find employment easily without knowing much English. We lived in the trailer park for a year before we got "the hell out of Dodge" and moved back to Dallas, Texas, where I spent my pre-teen years.

Like, Kate, I too had a mullet; albeit mine was when I was ten and Kate still has hers, even if it is a reverse mullet. I was tempted to post a picture of my mullet haircut, but fear that I would lose all crediblity. Really, next time you see my name in a post, you'll be thinking, "Oh, it's the girl with the Neck Beard/The Tennessee Top Hat/ The Kentucky Waterfall/ and The Camaro Crash Helmet [insert any sort of nicknames you may have]."

Kate is no class-act, but no matter how much "success" we achieve, can Kate and I ever be free from the trailer trash stigma? You can take the girl out of trailer park, but can you really take the trailer park out of the girl?! I would like to think so, but maybe I'm naive?!

I agree that real celebrities need to create a scandal. I'm tired of hearing about these two! Seriously, other than the Osbournes, is there a single "reality" couple that has survived intact after their show?

I am sick of all of the Jon and Kate stuff too. I am giggling over the reverse mullet...I hate her hair; it drives me crazy.
Please post your mullet picture...it will only make you more endearing! I'll post my buzz cut I had when I was 10!

My hubby grew up moving trailer parks every month when they couldn't pay the rent. Look at him now, getting his administration degree!

Perhaps she spent considerably more time in the trailer park than you did. But, it is not a fair assessment. It is sad when we are keeping the media love fest alive with a non-celebrity about her highly dysfunctional life. Can we say overexposure?

Jon and Kate blah blah blah, we all have our problems and don't get paid 10 mil to air the dirty laundry. Personally I think it's all a publicity stunt for higher ratings.

Agreed. There's too much of Jon and Kate out there right now. Although I have never lived in a trailer I feel a bit sensitive to anyone who does. It is considered affordable housing, which we all know there isn't enough of. And I know plenty of people who grew up in lovely middle to upper class homes who treat people like crap....so I'm thinking it doesn't really matter where anyone comes from, no?

If where you live is who you are, I'm doomed.

So the only trash I see is the magazines obsession with trashing the Gosselins lives even further. Turn the cameras off, and let them be parents. The end.

Thanks for sharing, its nice to know more about you!

Blessings,
Carolynn

Kids can't control what family they are born into and what decisions their parents make.

They can, however, overcome MENTALITY that parents put into them at a young age.

We all just need to grow up a little and look at people for what they are NOW!

I wish they would just shut that show down already!!

Poor Kate how did she ever survive?

I agree...I've had enough too.
But I really want to see the photos of the mullet. THAT, is worth checking out.
Mullet...mullet...mullet...
that's me chanting for the mullet pictures...:)
I had a mullet too...only mine was called a "bi-level". :)

im with you... im so tired of hearing all about them.. its kinda like enough already, puh-leeeze!

I am tired of hearing about it too. It's enough already.

And I am pretty sure that we have all had a mullet or some other atrocity of a haircut at some point in our lives. I know I have.

Hey you do what you gotta do right? The most important thing is that you have good hair now! As for Kate, well she still has major issues. Do watch this show called The Dish, on the Style network? The host did a hilarious spoof of Kate with the worst wig, it was super funnY!

I'm so over Jon and Kate-- and I have never even watched the show! I do not get her hair either.

As for trailer parks-- If anyone asks tell them you liked in one in Los Angeles-- with a drop dead gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean-- Some of the trailer parts here are on PRIME real estate and people would be VERY impressed!

Trailor park schmailor park. When did they get such a bad rap? Maybe it's all Eminems fault. Get it? Bad rap?

I'm really funny, I promise.

I too had a mullet when I was 5, I blame my mother.

I know our backgrounds do shape who we are today, but when do we get to let it go. For example, looking at my husband you will never think that he was the soul provider of his mother, brother, and son or that he raised his son while away at college. These are good things but does it make him any better or less than the next person?

You are so funny! =)

Thanks for sharing with us and I will NEVER EVER think that you are "trailer trash." I mean, you have such great taste in jewelry! haha.

=)

I've been following their scandal on the periphery... gosh I hope the kids don't get too scathed.

There is 'trailer trash', and people who have lived in trailers. Not the same. One is an economic need, another is an assumed state of class (often self-assumed). I have only just heard of Jon and Kate upon our return to the US (saw tabloid covers in line at the grocery store)... and have no idea who they are. I get the impression that I will not be interested.

Great post!

Although I have never seen the show, I have heard enough online.

As for the trailer park, didn't Hilary Swank live in a trailer park for a while? And she won an Oscar. Maybe you are on your way to win an Oscar!

Nobody would question your credibility even with a mullet. We have all gone through some pretty awkward stages, right?

You see..I'm just trying to get you to go ahead and show it.

I think it's ridiculous to explain someone's bad behavior by where they grew up. The fact is, at some point, we (as individual adults) have to take responsibility for our own lives and the way we act - regardless of our upbringing.

And when it comes right down to it, who cares if someone grows up in a trailer park; it's just another place to live. It's not about where you live, but about how you live.

Liz {Learning To Juggle} said...

well...I never had a mullet...but I totally rocked a really bad perm at one point!!

I just think that the media would fine any reason to knock her - she could be trailer trash or a spoiled rich brat - either way they would find some fault to hold against her!!

But I agree....lets move on.....

I have never heard all of those crazy mullet nicknames. Very funny!

I don't think that you could take the trailer park out of Kate but you, I think its safe to say its gone.

Ugh I know what you mean I've actually been avoiding reading about them, I really don't care for them, I rather read about Susan Boyle and her meltdown that sounds more interesting!!LOL

I think it is an insensitive statement to say that someone is trailer whatever ~ who the flip cares where you lived?? Seriously? I lived in a house growing up but my parents were dirt poor - what is the difference??

peewee said...

I don't know if this helps at all, but I am WAY trailer park trash...and I never even grew up in one! Besides....you're only trailer trash if you're born in America. Otherwise you're euro trash. And if we're being honest here, eurotrash is WAY worse!

Counselormama said...

As someone who works with a lot of this population, let me say there is a difference between staying in one until you have the financial ability to move on and the generational lifestyle of the trailer park. There is a big difference! It really is about who you are and not where you live, necessarily.

I think they're just trying to nit-pick at this point because there are no other big scandals to talk about. I think those two should just be left alone....but then again, they are in the public eye so it's to be expected I suppose.

Reverse mullet...oh man, that totally cracked me up!

Kathy B! said...

Of course you can!

I, too, have noticed the continual mentioning of her time in a trailer park. The whole coverage, everything about this story, really, has gotten ridiculous...

Bah. Jon and Kate. I have never watched their show, but the fact that they are banking so much buck from doing it just irritates me. As for the trailer park thing, nah, where you live does not necessarily make you who you are. Especially if it's just for a year. ;)

So right, darling! I am sooooo tired of this lady and I've never even watched her show!

"reverse mullet" - LOL! I have to remember this one:-)

Personally, I think "trailer trash" is a state of mind. You can live in a trailer park and be a great person. And you can live in a mansion and be trashy. Which pretty much means you should definitely post pictures of your mullet. ;o)

I have a hard time with both of them. They are both narcissists in my book.
