Keep on Swimming, Keep on Swimming…

Recently, I’ve signed M up for swim class. It was completely last minute, but M is at a point where he needs to work out some of his pent up energy. A lot of pent up energy.

By the time I was able to sign him up, only the earliest slot was available. Not surprising considering that I signed him up 12 hours before his first swim class. (Yeah, I’m a last minute kind of gal.) Needless to say, I was not thrilled at the idea of having to get up and immediately put on a bathing suit. Eck!

My son’s first impression of swim class was that it was “sexy.” As the moms were dressing or undressing themselves and their little ones, M made a wonderful impression by calling them and their kids sexy. Way to impress the ladies, son.

My first impression of swim class was not so positive. Swim class was like a big, warm bathtub where all the parents literally carry their children around and dance in circles, all while their bodies are half-way submerged in water. I don’t know what I was expecting, but certainly not singing and dancing to the Hokey Pokey; all that seems even hokier at 8 AM in the morning.

I was envisioning the Michael Phelps program (minus the weed), where M would be wearing those paper thin suits at the end of the program and swim like a little mer-baby around me. What’s with all this gentle nudging for them to even get their ears wet? I’m trying to train a future Olympian! Geesh! At one point, I almost wanted to tap the teacher on the shoulder and ask where the advanced class was…you know, because M is truly “advanced.”

Well, my lobbying for M’s promotion to the more advanced class is going nowhere. M and I are still in the average people swim class, but that’s because he hasn’t gotten "kicking off the wall" quite yet. We're practicing at home to hone that skill.

All joking aside, one great blessing about getting an early swim class is that the pool is clean. We all know that the swim diapers don’t do much and the idea of dancing around in pee-infested water, while singing the Hokey Pokey song, has me wanting to scream, “Everybody out of the pool!”

The levels of infestation in the evening classes must be horrific.

We took the early morning child's swim class too.

Anything is better than a poop-infested pool. And how hilarious is little M's 'sexy' comment. If I was one of the ladies there, I would feel so very flattered.

I need to sign my kid up. I should have done it earlier, but the thought of wearing a bathing suit somewhere other thanmy back yard was not very appealing to me either!

I am in love with your last minute-ness - 12 hours beforehand! Funny thing, I know how you feel - only I'd be 12 hours late.

Good luck getting into that "advanced" class. I hear they save the "best" for last (ie. when the pool is filled with baby pee from all the other classes).

M can call me sexy anytime.....really anytime...in fact is he busy right now 'cuz I could use a little emotional pick-me-up.

And bathing suit first thing in the morning....that's just pure torture!

Yes, a pee-free pool... way to see the silver-lining at 8 AM, Thuy.

I can just envision little M calling everybody "sexy." Why don't you introduce him to Justin's 'Sexy Back' song, and then he'll really entertain in the locker room.

Lori said...

oooh. Justin reads this blog.

HI JUSTIN!!!

I love that he's calling everyone Sexy, still. Doubly inappropriate in a swim class...

Okay, the sexy thing still totally cracks me up. ha!! I'm glad you found something to do, even if you're not in the advanced class yet. ;)

We did our first swim class last summer. The water was freezing and two teens taught us. It was strange but fun in away. We walked a way blue.

I'm such a bad mama...Neither of my boys have has swim lessons...the thought of putting on a bathing suit is just too much!

Hope your advanced mer-baby gets some pent up energy out at least!

My 3 sons are taking swimming lessons right now twice a week. This post makes me glad I am not in the parent tot class with my daughter!! Ha! Of course, the boys are swimming late in the afternoon so now I am imagining them swimming in pee-infested water. Nice! At least the oldest is a bit safer b/c he is in the bigger pool.

Ewwww, pee infested waters. LOL.

I was thinking the same exact thought when I read that you were in the 8 am class!!! I was like "thank Goodness, cuz could you imagine what the pool must be like for the 3:00 pm class!! There's nothing grosser than swimming in a public pool and then suddenly you hit an extemely rare warm area....yuck! You just know some kid peed in the water right there 1 minute before you swam into the same area!

I love his little sexy comment! I dunno....call me crazy....but if I was in a bathing suit and some little kid called me "sexy", it would probably make my day!

Oh my gosh! Can you imagine cranky kids in the afternoon before naptime and after lunch? BARF!

Debbie said...

Yes, the idea of being in a pool of baby pee isn't that appealing. I'm sorry you haven't been able to get promoted yet.

You are a much braver woman than I. I have not taken any of my boys to attempt swim class. To be honest I am super germaphobic and now even the thought of swimming around in other peoples sweat, juice or whatever totally grosses me out enough to stay away. My fear of wearing a baithing suit in public doesn't help either! I like that M sees naked ladies and blurts out sexy, Dad must be so proud!

How old is M. My baby is 8 months can I teach him how to swim. He loves the water. Well at least the tub.

M truly sounds like a little character :) Enjoy the swimming!

You're lucky if your only swimming with pee ... lol.

in the beginning its all about getting them comfortable in the water, and as far as the pee goes, you know how much chlorine they pump into the pool?!
{j like's to pee when we get home,'after' I have taken off the swim diaper}

Don't lose hope....M still has a chance at the Olympics! As long as he stays away from calling the kids "sexy" in the locker room, I think he'll be on the fast track.

You mean there's no weed at swim lessons? Why did you sign up again?

Donnetta said...

If only the weed could be delivered PRIOR to the beginning of class. Then getting into a swimsuit by 8:00 am wouldn't REALLY matter.

I am so impressed - you go to 8 AM class!! I knew he was going to say sexy!! LOL

Have fun. I did mom and tots with the two older ones. Jillian never got a chance because of her ears. This summer she is going to swimming lessons though!!

I know exactly what you are talking about, I have endured these "classes" for a few years with two separate children. I think just about anyone can teach them! I am looking forward to a mom free swim class for my kids this summer!

That is hilarious that he called them sexy!! I don't think I'd be up for getting in the pool at 8 am either!

...I despised swim lessons as a child--and never learned to swim well--I can "survive" in a body of water now... So I researched swim classes for the girls--but they were 3 before they were offically allowed to join a class here....both girls can swim laps around their floating mama..

Public pools are lovely, aren't they?

Cute!
We took our older boy to swim at 6mos. HE loved it. I hated it. He waited until 3yrs, when they can go in the pool on their own, after that. When/IF I ever had to go in pre-class, I'd bag out in Hubby's trunks and just try to hide!

Fortunately he wasn't too emotionally damaged from my reactions - he LOVES swimming to this day.

Heather said...

Haha, I LOVE that he said SEXY!

Does M pee in the pool? That's pretty much the most important swimming skill.

tiburon said...

I think I will use this tip as a good reason to choose early morning swim lessons - we have always done the afternoon - and the pool is nastay!

Eve said...

Oh - good point about the cleaner, early morning water. Definitely a tip to remember!

I know. Seriously! You really have to avoid thinking about PEE in the water when you swim with little kids. You know it is in there just floating around... Good luck!

He's still on 'sexy'? LOL!!!!
