Green Guilt

Since Earth Day last week I’ve been feeling lots of “green guilt” towards my reckless consumption. I've decided to join forces with Thuy and take some small steps towards becoming more earth/green conscious. Here are my top five items I’ve recently purchased and am proud to say are officially GREEN!

1. Better World Books: I recently posted about my favorite spring books. If you wanted to purchase any of these books, but haven’t, please use this site. Better World Books not only has an amazing amount of books, but it also ships FREE in the US and costs only $3.97 to ship anywhere in the world. In addition, the company supports book drives and collects textbooks from universities and colleges. They convert these donated books into funds, which they use for literacy and education programs.

2. Ecojot: This paper company has some of the cutest journals around. All of their products are made from 100% post consumer recycled paper, their inks and glues are vegetable based, and the paper is chlorine free. Check out their darling sketchbooks for kids.

3. Grip Color EcoPencils: Not only are these easy on the eyes, but these pencils are also triangular, which means they won’t roll off your table. They’re non-toxic and made from reforested sources in Brazil. Plus, they have polka-dots! Hello? Need I say more?

4. Reuseable Snack Bags: Confession: I use a lot of Ziploc bags! I am sure that my consumption doubled after Emi’s arrival too. I’ve started the process of purchasing reuseable snack bags for my lunch. They can be a bit pricey for one bag, but it seems like a good investment, especially since I take my lunch to school and use about 5 ziploc bags a day! Yikes! Click on the different bags to be directed to the seller's sites.

Also, be sure to check back with us on Friday for Thuy's post about these lovely Evelynfield's bags. She'll be hosting a giveaway.

5. I’m Not a Paper Cup…cup: I converted my water bottle to a stainless steel bottle about a year ago. Yet, when it comes to my daily cup(s) of coffee, I’m guilty of using many paper cups. This cup solves my paper cup problems. I especially like the fact that it’s microwaveable, since most days I don’t finish my coffee until after I reach the classroom. (Maybe that’s why I’m so irritatable?)

Here's to taking the first of many small green steps!

Remember to visit us Friday for your chance to enter Thuy's giveaway.

I have got to get some of the snack bags! Ziplocs are such an important part of packing lunches... at least if you need to have a lunch box that child can carry!

I have a drawer in my kitchen devoted to rags... dish rags, polish rags, floor rags, you name it... old face clothes eventually gravitate to this drawer. I use very few paper towels or other disposable wipes.

The reusable sandwich bag is a great idea. We started using tupperware when we ran out of ziploc bags earlier this year. But the sandwich bags are cuter.
Great list!

Kacey, I love those reusable snack bags! I never get plastic grocery bags, I ride the bus, I recycle, but it kills me that I'm still using plastic bags for lunches! I love this idea. And since I sew, I'll bet I can make these too!

Thanks for sharing!

Here's another addition to your list! Reusable produce bags:

Snack bags are on the top of my list to get into the habit of using.

Love the reusable bags! I go through Ziplock bags like nobody's business, too, so those would be good for me. And, you know, the Earth.

Thanks for the links and ideas! Those little baggies are so cute too - I almost want to switch more for the cuteness than the green-ness (but green is very good too)!

another green pencil or colored pencil idea is smencils. they are scented pencils with recycled newspaper instead of wood. they smell delicious. they aren't triangle though.

I LOVE the Ecojot paper. Seriously, I recommend it to everyone. The notebooks are adorable and it's like 100% recycled.

Thanks so much for the links. My state isn't as friendly toward the green, so some of this is stuff I've never heard of!

Great post!!! I recently have been having green guilt as well. I don't do nearly as much as I should. I told the hubby that we need to be a bit more green and I'm going to really implement this. I don't know where to begin but I'm going to begin none the less.

In my opinion you should just fix the contest and let me win. End of subject.

My daughter and I just received reusable sandwich and snack bags that we ordered in honor of Earth Day and after using them a few times, I have to say I love them. The only problem is that I didn't get enough, so now I feel horrible whenever I do have to add a Ziploc bag. I need to get some more.

Great ideas, thanks!

I'm working on getting greener as well. Some of my choices just seem wasteful. I started using a resusable lunch bag a while back, so reusable baggies (or containers, as they're cheaper) will be the next step!

Great list of stuff! Those snack bags are adorable, I might have to attempt making some for my kiddos' lunch boxes, too. I wonder how long they would last before they got hopelessly stained or greasy?
