It's been raining non-stop around here lately and nothing is more thrilling than trying to keep our little ones occupied. Of course, we resorted to one of our favorite indoor activities yesterday, playing with play dough. That is, until Lucia and M started eating the play dough.
Yesterday's escapades made me think of an edible playdough recipe that I saw on Jon and Kate Plus 8 last year. As much as I don't like how Kate treats Jon sometimes, I do admire that woman. I can barely handle one child and she takes care of eight and still manages to incorporate activities and educational games into their lives. Bless her!!
Here are some recipes that I found that should be fun and safe (even to eat):
Edible Play Dough Recipe as seen on Jon & Kate
Plus 8
Equal Parts:
Powdered Milk
Smooth Peanut Butter
Honey
(Flour as needed)
Mix the first 3 ingredients together and then add enough flour until it reaches playdough consistency. If you want to make this more fun, you can add food coloring. Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.
Jello Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1 (3-1/2 oz.) package unsweetened Jell-0
1. Mix all ingredients together in saucepan.
2. Place saucepan on stove and turn burner to medium heat.
3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until consistency of mashed potatoes.
4. Let playdough cool and knead with floured hands until dry.
5. Playdough is fun! Give to children to enjoy!
Kool-Aid Playdough
(I love the smell of Kool-Aid and I can imagine all the fun flavors to try.)
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
3 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1 package Kool-Aid Mix (any flavor of unsweetened)
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1. Gather all ingredients and saucepan.
2. Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, and Kool-Aid Mix together in a large saucepan.
3. Mix water with oil in a cup.
4. Place the saucepan on the stove and turn the burner to medium heat.
5. Slowly add the water mixed with oil and stir (over medium heat) until the mixture thickens to playdough.
6. Place playdough on cutting board, counter top, or table and knead until cool.
I found these recipes on E-how, but there are lots of wonderful links out there. If you're still looking for more play dough ideas, I was particularly impressed with this site: Making Friends.
If only play dough would keep M occupied for more than 10 minutes. Now what do I do with him the other 12 hours and 50 minutes of the day?!?

Love this! We will definitely be trying to make some of this today! We're in Indiana, so we have MAJOR cabin fever at this point of the year. Thanks for the recipes!
Courtney
My kids LOVED homemade play dough!
I used some really basic more than likely toxic recipe, but hey, they surrvived :)
I think the way Kate talks to her husband is HORRIBLE, I can't stand it, but you know who's worse?
The little people wife.
She may be a little person, but she's a big b*tch
Great ideas! Great recipe I will be trying the koolaid one today thanks!
wonfderful!
Do you have a recipe that cleans up after itself? I hate play doh messes....
Sounds like a fun day! I'll have to try the edible play dough.
Sounds like L & M have very distinguishing palettes! Colin's preschool adds glitter to their homemade Playdoh to make it even more fun.
That Kool-Aid one sounds great! Thanks!
recipes for good times!!! we are going to try it!
How funny, yesterday I was complaining to my mom about keeping my kids occupied indoors and she suggested Play dough!
I shall try the peanut butter one post haste!
I remember my mom made home made play dough which wasn't supposed to be edible but I'd eat it anyway. It was so salty and so good! Guess that's why I love licking the salt off my margarita glass so much!
If my mom made the Peanut Butter kind that Kate makes, it would definately go in my tummy right away! No playing neccesary!
I watch Jon & Kate too and sometimes the way she yells at him in public and treats him like a dog drives me crazy! I hope I never end up like that after we have kids!
Your telling me that your little lovelies can play and then eat the playdough as well. You are the best mommy ever!
Mrs. Parks is funny about the Little person comment. I love the homemade play doh idea, the peanut butter one actually sounds kinda tasty! :)
I'll trade you my snow for your rain :)
Love all the choices! Thanks for sharing these! I love making homemade playdough and am going to enjoy trying these out!
Thanks for sharing the 3 different recipes.
A note for everyone - please don't use the peanut butter recipe in a public setting if there is any chance someone could be allergic to peanuts. I am scared of homemade playdough b/c my son has a life-threatening allergy to peanuts.

Ummm...do you mean to tell me that regular Play-doh isn't edible?
I haven't seen these recipes before. Looks great!!
My oldest kid is almost 31 and the youngest is 24. I still get crap for not letting them play w/ play dough. I think it's disgusting. That is just my personal opinion. I didn't mean to sound like some old anti-play dough hag. Now I am just rambling, so I'll say good bye.
Edible play dough? Wow! this is a great idea, Francesca. Thanks for sharing this to us. :)
My childhood would have been so much more awesome if my mom had a blog like yours to read.
Jello playdough? Awesome.
I might make some just for myself.
And yes, I'm 22.
Go figure.
My kids love the pnut butter and honey playdough... sometimes I think they eat more than they mold..
What fun new recipes to try for a classic fave. Would you mind if we link to your post to share these recipes on our round up of playdough recipes?
