Best Friends

Anyone that knows me is familiar with the fact that I am not an overly sentimental person. I have never kept a journal. Heck, I can barely find the time to update my children's baby's books. So when Thuy suggested we start a blog, I thought, what? What would I possibly have to share with the world? True to form, my first foray into the blog world focused on posting the shopping tips that I had accumulated. Once that item was checked off my "to do" list, it was time to move onto other things, but what? My days are fairly ordinary. I cook, clean, shop, and care for our kids. However, in looking at friend's (and stranger's) blogs, I have come to realize that it is life's ordinary experiences that make our own world more fun and somewhat extra-ordinary.

Story #1:
Everyday, my son and I read books, usually before his nap, because at bedtime, I fall asleep reading to him. One of our favorites is Gossie and Gertie. "Gossie and Gertie are friends. Best friends." That phrase will forever have a place in my memory. Today, once the story was over, G looked at me and said, "Mama, you're my best friend." What joy! I am my son's best friend! I thought, this is it...one of life's best moments. I answered, "G, you are my best friend, too. I love you." (A few seconds pass. I might have shed a tear from sheer happiness.) G looked at me and said, "Mama, the garbage man is my best friend." Really? The garbage man? I know his truck is pretty amazing, but does he rank as high as mama in your heart?

"OK...time for bed. Mama has to clean up lunch."

Oh, I love that. How fantastic that you rank as high as the garbage man. That is no small feat, my friend!! Very sweet.

F, I couldn't stop laughing at the story. I love it!! M and I wait every Friday morning for our garbage man and as I'm planning my Christmas list, I thought that if I gave him more than chocolates this year, he'd be willing to wave to us every once in awhile. Maybe I will rethink this...why endear this man to us when he is my competition, right?! :)

More stories, please!!
